October Surprise Contest Answers (and Winner)

by | published Saturday, October 10, 2020

We had ten, count’em ten entries to our October Surprise Contest. Just as a reminder, the challenge was to identify the games clued by the following “Wacky Wordy”-style clues:

The answers (with explanations) are as follows:

  1. Just One (‘cuz that’s all there is!)
  2. Five Tribes (as in, the sons of Jacob from the Old Testament, twelve in all but here only five)
  3. Silver and Gold (Ag and Au are the chemical symbols for those two metallic elements respectively)
  4. Commands and Colours: Ancients (the first column are all commands you would give a dog; the second column are all colours; the third are both Ancient civs)
  5. World Without End (the word “world” without its ending letter)
  6. Orleans (“or” leans to one side; boooo, I know)
  7. Potion Explosion (the letters in the word “potion” have exploded all over the box)
  8. Time’s Up (the letters in the word “time” going in an upward direction)
  9. Paperback (the word “paper” spelt backwards)
  10. Nations (they’re all countries, which is a synonym for nations)
  11. Newton (the letter N is the symbol for the unit of force called a “Newton”–one kilogram accelerating at the rate of 1 metre per second squared #physicsnerd)
  12. Gold West (the word is spelt in gold letters)
  13. Winner’s Circle (the word is arranged in a circle)
  14. Vinhos (the letter “V” is in the letters “hos”)
  15. El Grande (it’s a big letter “L”)
  16. Alien Frontiers (the word “frontiers” spelt in the same font as the movie “Alien”; one entry had Star Trek Frontiers but I’ve checked and it’s not quite the same font…)
  17. Medina (the letters in “med” are in the hole in the capital “A”)
  18. Honshu (“H” is on the “shoe”)

Two people got all 18 correct, and my random generator has chosen Joseph Harris as the winner! Congrats to Joseph and all the entrants, and stay tuned for the annual Generic Winter Holiday contest. It’s gonna be a doozy!

haha fun quiz. I think I got 12 right. Two of my wild guesses were pretty close, I had HoverShoe instead of Honshu and Mixed Options over Potion Explosion. Very well thought out puzzles.

(but yes, boooo to Orleans. haha)
