Board Game Survey!

by | published Friday, January 22, 2016

Here in Toronto, we’ve got a pretty great gaming scene. Lots of gamers at regular groups, FLGSs, out at conventions, and in board game cafes. Lots of different types of gamers. All sorts of awesome. But we’re not representative of gamers everywhere. Not in the rest of Canada, North America, or the world. We’ve been curious about the diversity and interests of the hobby for a while, so we’ve designed a survey that is comprehensive in its scope, without drilling down to much to fine details.

We do want to hear about demographics – but we respect the decisions of people who might not want to share that, so throughout that section you can select ‘prefer not to answer’.

The next part covers some basics on the board game hobby, and we’d like to know your answers to at least all of those questions. The rest of the survey examines a number of aspects of you as a gamer, and the games you love, the events you attend and how you take part. Those sections are:

  • Gaming with a partner
  • Gaming with kids/family
  • Solo gaming
  • Gaming with friends/game groups
  • Purchasing games
  • Game storage and gaming space
  • Game collection
  • Teaching and learning games
  • Games – types, genres & playing
  • Gaming events and specialized venues
  • BoardGameGeek
  • Apps & Technology
  • Social Media

The survey should take about 10 minutes of your time. We appreciate every moment of that time! We’d love for you to share it with friends on BGG, on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, too! The more people, the more data, and the better picture we’ll get of the hobby worldwide. Once the survey closes at the end of February, we’ll work on mining that data and producing some great infographics to share with the community.
Thanks, everyone!

Nicole had played a lot of backgammon, Life and Monopoly when younger. She started playing hobby games in University after trying out D&D 3rd edition, and then joining her University game club. After a while she gravitated towards board games as a casual gamer. After moving to Toronto in 2009 she started gaming more and met her (former) partner Adam through the hobby and hasn't turned back. It's hard for her to pick a favourite game, but if you really stared her down she might pick Castles of Burgundy. When not gaming, Nicole enjoys cooking/baking, reading comics, watching tv/movies and visiting museums! And cuddling every dog she can.
