October Surprise Contest

by | published Friday, October 2, 2020

Here it is October and—surprise!—we’ve got a content for you. I actually concocted it back in the spring during our run of Lockdown Puzzles but now seems as good a time as any to pull it out and give you a diversion.

One of the most popular ongoing puzzles in GAMES Magazine history was “Wacky Wordies”, which premiered in the early 1980’s and was brought back again and again by popular demand. Wacky Wordies are basically charades using only words and letters, puns and wordplay.

Each of the eighteen boxes below represents the title of a well-known Tabletop game. See how many you can figure out. Keep a flexible and open mind and don’t be afraid, despite the tabular format, to think outside the box.

Answers will be posted next Friday. Email yours to dailyworkerplacement@gmail.com. The person with the most correct answers (randomly chosen in the case of ties) will receive a NIS copy of the classic climbing game Tichu (North American shipping only, alas). Have fun!

His collection currently consists of about 600 games, which take up way too much space. His game "Odd Lots" won the inaugural TABS Game Design Contest in 2008. He is currently Managing Editor of The Daily Worker Placement. All in all he's pretty smug about his knowledge of games and game design.

Hi there, just wanted to confirm whether the first word in #2 should be “Reuben” (not Reuven)? In a word puzzle these specifics may or may not be important. Thanks!

Let’s just say the spelling I grew up with was Reuven (with a ‘v’) but I have seen it Anglicized as Reuben (with a ‘b’). Either way it does not change the answer.
