Brew Dice: Literally Beer and Pretzels

by | published Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Let’s say you’re killing time before the rest of your game group shows up, or you’re out on the town, but you still want to get your game on. The perfect option is a filler game, or as they’re sometimes called, a beer and pretzels game. These titles are defined by their dead simple rules, their short time commitment, and their high-replayability making them perfect for just about any situation.

Brew Dice is a literal beer and pretzels game. In a case of games becoming meta, like Deck Builder: The Deck Building Game or Traitor Mechanic: The Traitor Mechanic Game, Brew Dice takes on both the name and weight of its theme.

In Brew Dice, up to four players square off, armed with three custom engraved coloured dice. One of the 20 cards is flipped and then players race to roll their dice and match the three elements represented on the cards.

Each card shows a beer (in a can, bottle, or glass), a coaster (star, square, or circle), and a snack (pretzels, popcorn, or peanuts). The players’ dice have faces that refer to one of the elements of the card.

As soon as a player matches all three of the elements on the current card, they grab it and flip the next. The first player to collect five cards wins the game.

Now, one characteristic of game like this is speed. The faster you can roll your dice and snatch the card, the better you’re going to do. However, speed can come at a cost. If a player goes too fast and erroneously takes a card, that card is placed on the bottom of the deck, and the offending player sits out a round.

Players can add the Lucky Roll variant, allowing a player who rolls a perfect match on their first roll to take the active card and steal one from another player.

With its light mechanics, you may not want to build an entire game night around Brew Dice, but it is definitely a fun diversion in between meatier fare. Due to lots of dice rolling and card grabbing, you may want to be a little bit careful with any drinks you have on the table, alcoholic or otherwise.
